b'ITAMAR RABINOVICH IItamar Rabinovich is Professor Emeritus of Middle Eastern History at Tel Aviv University (TAU). He is Israels former Ambassador to the United States and former Chief Negotiator with Syria in the mid-1990s, and the former President of Tel Aviv University (1999-2007). He is the President of the Dan David Foundation, President Emeritus and Counselor of the Israel Institute (Washington and Tel Aviv), and a Distinguished Fellow of the Brooking Institutions Foreign Policy Program. Amb. Rabinovich has been a member of Tel Aviv Universitys faculty since 1971 and served as Ettinger Professor of the Contemporary History of the Middle East, Chairman of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, Director of the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, Dean of Humanities, and Rector. He is the Vice Chairman of the INSS (Institute for National Security Studies), an external institute of TAU, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies. He is Co-Editor of the Centers review journal, Bustan. Amb. Rabinovich is the author of numerous books on the modern history and politics of the Middle East and the co-author and co-editor of several other volumes, as well as the author of numerous essays and papers. In 2017, he published the biography of Yitzhak Rabin with Yale University Press and Israel Facing a Changing Middle East (with Itay Brun) with Hoover Institution Press. The Rabin biography was translated into seven languages and is the winner of the 2017 Washington Institutes Gold Medal and the 2020 President and Prime Minister of Israel Prize. His book, Syrian Requiem (with Carmit Valensi), was published in February 2021 by Princeton University Press. His most recent book, Middle Eastern Maze: Israel, the Arabs, and the Region, 19482022, was published in Hebrew in November 2022, and was released by Brookings Institution Press in March 2023. The Israeli paradox: at 75, Israel is an amazing success story, and yet it remains very fragile.Over the years, Amb. Rabinovich held several public positions in Israel and in other countries. He has held visiting appointments in several academic institutions, including the Institute of Advanced Studies in Princeton, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Toronto. the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, the Hoover Institution, and New York University. Amb. Rabinovich is a member of the American Philosophical Society and a Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has been awarded the Honorary Grand Golden Cross of the Austrian Republic and has been made by the Government of the French Republic a Commandeur lOrdre des Palmes Acadmiques.
